I am a technology lawyer and author of Workplace Strategies for Technology Lawyers: 36 Practical Tips on How to Communicate More Effectively, Work More Efficiently, and Give Better Advice as In-House Counsel at a Tech Company, a real-world book of practical tips on the skills you need to perform at a high level as an in-house lawyer at a technology company. My second book, 5 Reasons Why You May Not Want to Be an In-House Counsel (And 10 Strategies for Succeeding in the Role Anyway), provides practical insights on the tradeoffs of going in house and how to make the most of the in-house career path.
For most of my legal career, I have advised tech companies at various stages - from startups to established companies, in collaboration with business https://linksquares.com/cockpit-counsel-series/avoiding-escalations-david-sclar/leaders and their teams.
I wrote two books on in-house counsel careers because, after years of experience and on-the-job training, I have learned how to succeed in the role, and I have advised others on how they can, too.
I have served as the Healthcare Compliance and Privacy Officer at WW International (formerly Weight Watchers)*, helping WW emphasize tech-focused initiatives for its proven weight loss program.
Previously, I spent 6 years at Rally Health, where I joined a rapidly growing startup as their second lawyer and Chief Privacy Officer and helped the company grow through “Unicorn” status and acquisition by UnitedHealthcare.
I have also served as outside counsel to tech companies at BigLaw firms Ropes & Gray and Cooley.
I graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School and hold privacy and security certifications HCISPP, CIPP/US, and CIPP/C.
